24th Annual NCMC Turkey Trot

The North Colorado Medical Center Foundation, along with the CardioVascular Institute of North Colorado at NCMC hosted the 24th Annual Turkey Trot, presented by Chevron on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021.

On a brisk but dry Thanksgiving morning, over 2,300 in-person and virtual runners and walkers participated in the 2K/5K Fun Run/Walk, one of the largest Turkey Trot races on Thanksgiving Day in Northern Colorado! Over $34,000 net proceeds will be utilized to assist Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab patients.

The NCMC Foundation extends a huge thank you to all of our sponsors and committee members who helped make the event so successful! “It was amazing to see so many people from the Greeley and surrounding community come out to support this year’s race after being completely virtual last year, and to see those who could not be there in person participate virtually” said Allison Miller, Development Program Director at the NCMC Foundation.  “The support for this event continues to be strong year after year, and that goes to show how amazing our community is.”

A special thank you to The Greeley Central Chamber Choir for their beautiful performance of the national anthem.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death in the United States.  Approximately every 36 seconds, an American will die from cardiovascular disease, totaling about 655,000 deaths per year, which equates to approximately one of every four deaths.  Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is the third leading cause of disease-related deaths in the United States according to the National Lung Association.  The number of people who have COPD is on the rise with more than 16 million who are currently diagnosed.  Many more may have COPD and not realize it.  Lung disease affects more than just the lungs, but the entire body.  The brain, heart, muscles, and all organs are affected by less oxygen.

The Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at NCMC helps patients with heart and pulmonary conditions live healthier lives.  A team of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation specialists tailor individual exercise, diet, and treatment programs to meet each patient’s needs. Studies have demonstrated that patients who participate in cardiac rehabilitation programs have a significant reduction in their mortality rates, earlier return to work, significantly improved quality of life, and learn valuable skills that can prevent complications and hospitalizations. The Cardiac Rehabilitation program has been recognized by the prestigious American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation as a certified program.

The NCMC Foundation utilizes proceeds from the Turkey Trot event through individual grants which provide financial assistance to patients of the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs.  These patients would otherwise not be able to engage in the rehabilitation program.  Participating in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation through the CardioVascular Institute of North Colorado helps individuals improve strength and endurance so they may return to their usual activities and life demands as much as possible with renewed confidence.
