Once upon a time, not so long ago, a tiny patient was born. This tiny patient required extra medical care and would need to travel to a distant hospital called North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC). She would need to spend several weeks at the Monfort Family Birth Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The journey was long, and a vital piece of equipment called a Transport Isolette, specially designed for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) babies, was needed. The isolette maintains a warm environment, especially for a premature baby, who cannot maintain body heat.
In 2020, there were 35 neonatal transports to NCMC, many from hospitals on the eastern plains and surrounding areas, and 14 neonatal transfers from NCMC. Currently, all neonatal transports to or from NCMC are performed by specialized teams based in Denver, all of them by flight unless weather prohibited. Flight transports are more costly and increase the overuse of critical care air movement. With the purchase of a Transport Isolette, a specialized neonatal transport team based at NCMC can decrease cost of care for patients, create patient and family centered care with fewer transitions and assumption of care at the time a team arrives on-site, increase timeliness of a transport, and improve efficiency and equity of care overall. Proceeds from the NCMC Foundation Gala will benefit the Monfort Family Birth Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with the purchase of a Transport Isolette.
